BMI categories (WHO)
- Underweight — below 18.5
- Healthy weight — 18.5–24.9
- Overweight — 25.0–29.9
- Obesity class I — 30.0–34.9
- Obesity class II — 35.0–39.9
- Obesity class III — 40.0 and above
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)².
These categories are for adults (18 and over). For children and teenagers, doctors read BMI against age- and sex-specific percentiles instead.
What BMI misses
BMI doesn’t know the difference between muscle and fat, so trained athletes often land in the “overweight” band while being lean. It also ignores where fat sits — waist circumference is a better signal of metabolic risk — and the same value means different things across ages and ethnic groups.
Use it as one data point next to your waist measurement, your weight trend and how your training and energy feel.
